Visit Gordes: A Hilltop Town in Provence
Discover a Storybook French Village
If you haven't heard about Gordes yet, I'll cut to the chase — Gordes is one of the most beautiful villages in Provence that transports you back in time. Its enchanting ambiance is thanks to centuries of artisans contributing to its vibrant and delicious scenery.
We visited Gordes, France, during our 10-day summer trip to Provence. Whether you can visit for a day trip or one of the lucky ones who stays a few days in one of Gordes' boutique hotels, I don't say this often, but Gordes is worth the hype... just be sure to mentally prepare for the crowds.
Gordes is a must-visit destination in Provence
It was a hot day in the middle of June, and although we thought we got an early start, 11 am was not "early" enough. As we approached the charming hillside village in Provence, the traffic was a clear sign—it would be busy. Parking in Gordes is limited, so plan accordingly—but trust me, the panoramic views of the Luberon Valley alone are worth the hike!
The village hosts art galleries, craft shops, and cultural events throughout the year, but it's renowned for its delightful weekly market, which is full of local produce, gourmet treats, and handmade wares. No wonder the Gordes market attracts visitors from around the world! If you plan to visit Gordes, be sure to coordinate with their famous Tuesday market.
In the market square, the sound of lively chatter, the occasional bark of a dog, and the rhythmic clinking of café glasses filled the air, blending with the hum of cicadas in the background.
Eating Our Way Through Gordes Market
A traditional Provençal market is always a good idea, but the Gordes market feels like strolling through a movie set. It's known as one of the best markets in France.
Visiting this iconic Provence village is a fully sensorial experience. The air was thick with the scent of dried lavender bundled and tied neatly with twine. Stalls overflowed with French cheeses, jars of golden honey, woven baskets, striped linen tablecloths, and handmade ceramics. Gordes offered all the treasures I wished I could have in my suitcase.
At the Gordes farmer's market, we picked up treats like creamy pistachio paste, freshly baked bread, and briny green and black olives for which the region is known. The fruit stalls were art, deep red cherries glistening in the sunlight, golden apricots warm from the morning sun, and plump strawberries with green leaves still attached.
The star of the market was one of my favorite French treats — soft, chewy nougat with orange and pistachio. I bought an ample supply, intending to take some back to Amsterdam. Still, it was too delicious to eat slowly, and I'd go back to Gordes to get more of that nougat.
Wandering the Historic Streets of Gordes
The best things to do in Gordes include simply exploring—getting lost in its winding cobblestone streets, admiring the historic stone architecture, and stopping for a coffee with a view of the Luberon countryside.
Summer mid-day heat settled in quickly, the stone buildings radiating warmth as we made our way through hidden alleyways, seeking shade under ancient archways.
After the market, we explored the quieter side of this iconic Provence village, stumbling upon vines heavy with passion flowers, where I spotted giant bees nestled among the blossoms. I couldn't resist photographing them—nature in all its vibrant, layered beauty, perfectly framed by the rustic charm of this hillside town.
Gordes is the quintessential Provençal town that stays with you long after you leave. If you aren’t already convinced this is absolutely worth a visit, let me tell you that I still dream about this village—the golden light, the scent of lavender in the air, the feeling of history in every stone path. I hope I'll be back again one day.
